Blue Heron Farm Winter CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)
As of 12/1/11 the 2012 Winter CSA is full.
Even during the long, cold northeast winters, it’s possible to eat a varied local diet.
To help sustain both our farm income and the viability of a year round local food system,
we decided many years ago to grow crops suitable for storage and to develop facilities
to keep them as fresh as possible all winter long. In 1997, we launched our first winter
CSA, with about 25 members. Interest grew, and each year we increased enrollment,
while becoming more confident at storing and distributing winter crops. In 2006, we built
a passive solar greenhouse and grew a successful crop of winter kale. Since then, we’ve
added other greens and continue to work hard at offering as much variety as possible to
our winter shares.
Every Saturday in January and February subscribers will be greeted by a display of
at least 6 different types of vegetables, to be selected, weighed and packed away in
their own bags or baskets. Potatoes and carrots and onions will be included every time.
Beets, Brussels sprouts, a variety of cabbages, celeriac, garlic, leeks, parsley root,
radishes, rutabagas, a variety of winter squash, shallots, and turnips will make regular
appearances. Kale, spinach, lettuce, or mustard greens will be available at least twice,
and possibly more, depending on the weather. Recipes and suggestions for how to use
unfamiliar items are posted monthly on our website
NEW FOR 2012!
We will be having Winter CSA distribution concurrently with sales at the Ithaca Farmer's Market winter market. The winter market will be held at Greenstar's "The Space". CSA distribution will be right around the corner in the purple warehouse, the same location where it's been for the last 3 years. Directions to the location, times, dates and other details will be
confirmed in a December mailing.
On-farm pickup in Lodi is an option on Tuesdays.
We have a limited number of shares to sell, so sign up early to avoid
disappointment.
Cost for a full share, a total of 8 deliveries, is $180.00. A full share will contain about 10
lbs. of produce (80 lbs. total).
Half shares are $100.00. Half shares will have about 5 lbs. each time (40 lbs. total).
To enroll, please read the details under 2012 application.
